Jack Thompson Update.

by HochulisPythons
April 30, 2008
With just about the entire world completely locked into Grand Theft Auto IV and its ridiculously deep setting of Liberty City, it seems that the enemy of all gamers, Jack Thompson, is at it again, and he's certainly been busy.

Thompson has led a charge in Miami to have just about all advertisements regarding GTA IV removed from the public transit authority in the Miami-Dade area. Chicago recently announced that they would also remove these advertisements from their buses as well.

However, the Florida-based lawyer has seemingly taken on a much larger opponent:

Everyone.

In a report that was released from ArsTechnica.com, Thompson claims that just about everyone is responsible for the mental anguish and years of abuse that this game will seemingly cause the world.

Indictments should be returned against Take Two corporately and its Chairman, Strauss Zelnick, along with other Take Two officers. Indictment should also be against Sony and Microsoft which are making this pornographic game available to minors, and openly so, on their PS3 and Xbox systems.

Further, indictments should be handed down against Wal-Mart, Best Buy, GameStop, and all other retailers distributing this game to minors at their retail stores, openly, to kids who are only seventeen.

Grand Theft Auto IV is the gravest assault upon children in this country since polio.

Now, that's just an excerpt from this report, but I simply have one question to pose him:

Really?

Let's think about this for a second. You want to bring up an indictment against not only the head of Take Two, but every retailer that carries the game? Does this mean you're going to take on the employees of these companies for simply selling these games? Honestly, I hope he does, because I work for one of these retailers, and he'll be happy to know that I refused to sell to a few kids because they weren't 17 years old.

That's right, ol' Jackie my boy. A retailer is actually following the rules.

It honestly makes you wonder if he actually thinks about what he says before he says it. Most everything he says, nowadays, is just sheer lunacy.

Apparently things aren't getting any better for Thompson as well. While the date for his Disbarment Trial decision was pushed back to the end of August, that is still certainly looming on the horizon. Let's face it: Gamers around the world will sing praises if he is disbarred and we never have to hear from him again.

Amen to that. I mean what a jackass. I think the industry police's itself pretty good considering the size of it. My wife is a manager of a Big name video store, and they wont rent to minors at all. You have to be 18 yrs old to have your own account. There will always be a story of a twelve year old buying the game. But over all I think people, parents, and gamers know what GTA is all about. No doubt my dumbass sister inlaw has bought the game for my 15 yr old nephew, but I'm not his parents. I have faith and trust in him that it's not going to send him out on a killing spree. (start with your parents please)

Wow, he's saying GTA 4 is on par with polio?
At least that breaks up the almost unanimous "10's" everyone's giving it :P

Lord Aldemar
Posted 64 days 14 hours ago

saying GTA 4 is as bad as polio is bullshit. That's like what he was saying about September 11th being the fault of videogames.

Jack needs a psych-eval, rather than evaluating others. He won't stop, even if someone does something he'll still be a martyr for his cause.

The best thing now, is just to ignore him.

HochulisPythons
Posted 64 days 12 hours ago

Well, I would ignore him, but he seemingly pops up all the damn time. Hopefully, by the end of Summer, his Disbarment is final and he's eliminated from the public eye altogether.

lol I never heard the 9/11- videogame connection. I hadn't realized al quaida were gamers. Rockstar should have made Niko a middle eastern refugee, so they could identify with it, lol.

I can't argue what he's saying to some extent though- this game is umm... borderline pornographic. Not what you see, but what you hear... and yeah, what you see too. I mean- Niko's face when he gets the "$20 hooker service" is... priceless. It seems like the only boundaries Rockstar REALLY pushed with the game are the boundaries between M and AO...

That said- it IS rated M, and it seems to me that most retailers are pretty serious about keeping it out of kids hands. I think he's overlooking that the reason a lot of minors have this game is because their PARENTS are buying it for them... so if anyone should face charges- how about looking closer to home??

But come on- how hilarious is the dialog of this game???

*edit* I just reread what he said- he doesn't seem to be saying retailers are selling it illegally, he's saying that since M games are 17 and up that minors have access to it. He has a point there, but really what is a kid better prepared for at 17 than he is at 18? And how many kids hit 17 and haven't seen more than this game shows anyway on the internet?

The problem with jack thompson is that he is a money hungry ambulance chaser. If it is a school shooting or involves minors in any way he chases after it on places like Fox Noise claiming that video games are at fault. Look at what heppened with the VTech massacre last year. Literally 20 minutes into the incident he was on Fox claiming that video games were at fault before the shooter was even known. That is the way he is. He has been trying to do this for more than 10 years know with video games alone. Before that it was rap music. Before that he was a medical malpractice lawyer. He doesn't want video games just out of the hands of children. He wants them banned completely, and wants Rockstar games destroyed. He has stated this himself.

I don't mean to de-rail this conversation but I just had to say that I wish he could've gotten rid of rap music...my life would be much more enjoyable.

LOL I agree, I hate rap music... and I hate the fact that it seems to turn everyone who listens to it into jerks who don't care about their neighbors and blast it with the bass as high as it goes.

Other than that, he sounds like there's a screw loose, but you know... freedom of speech and all, whatcha gonna do?

Well, from a legal standpoint, most of his motions in court are, at the best, frivolous. He seemingly gets off on trying to fight these crusades, believing that people will back his cause.

Truthfully, I just want him to go away. I'm sick of hearing about him and seeing him on television. I'm just glad I don't watch FOX News on a regular basis because he is apparently their "First Amendment Lawyer" now, which is disturbing.

PSORaine
Posted 63 days 11 hours ago

Well there needs to be a crack down against frivolous lawsuits. Especially if it's the same person using multiple lawyers to file them- or like in this case- the same lawyer filing multiple frivolous lawsuits. I mean, if you file a suit, and it gets thrown out, why should you be allowed to keep refiling similar lawsuits for years and years and years?

Well, good news is, he is extremely close to being disbarred. The decision should come down sometime this summer, according to Gamepolitics.

I see absolutely no point. Laws against selling violent video games to minors are simply unconstitutional, and there are plenty of rulings to back it up. In my opinion, retailers need to step up and forget about the ESRB. Organizations like the ESRB and MPAA have too much control. Parents should be the ones deciding what their kids play or watch. Censorship only harms the youth; It doesn't protect them.

I live in Florida and I remember all the problems vice city caused...almost 2 years after it came out. The kill the Haitians mission pissed somebody off and the games mission was reworded. Honestly, I think JT just likes to here himself talk (even though he doesn't say anything worth listening to)

Bad parenting, son. If your immature child has 60 bucks plus tax you don't know about, you've got a problem. And if you don't see your child play it EVER and notice that he/she is blowing up prostitutes and civilians, you've got a huge problem.
So, Jack: Sue all parents. Ever. It's the next logical step in your campaign.

Just curious, why's that?

Sorry for the delay boobie (hehe) I just don't have a good history with rap, I'm constantly surrounded by it becuase of my neighbors who would rather travel to the junkyard and sell the spare parts for money instead of getting a real job. I always see a certain ethnic group ride around in cars that are about to fall apart but yet have a $5000 stereo system in the car and every time the car vibrates from the bass you can literally see the rust fall from the car and the windows vibrate...it also doesn't help that when said cars drive by my house it shakes my house....and yet the cops do nothing.

I listened to rap for a while and then I started DJ'ing. I have to agree with Raine because after meeting some of the artists out there and seeing how they act (as well as people in general as Raine stated) I just got turned off of the music. It's retarded and states the same thing in every song (money, cars, clothes, jewelry, blah blah blah.) That's my opinion of rap, not to be offensive of others that differ from mine.

Onto this, I wish I could be Rockstar president for a day. I would go "hey jack! F- You!" but than he would blame that on video games as well.

I am going to make another post on this subject but I just looked up countless things on jack thompson and fox news take on the SMALL Mass Effect "Sex Scene". Everyone was talking about games being violent but what about all these movies that are out there now that are constantly "pushing the envelope". What about the internet that leaves you to see anything and EVERYTHING that your happy little fingers can type in a search box? What it all boils down to is the parents watching and monitoring what goes on in there kids life. Parents ( not all of them, I know they are good ones out there but the bad ones are what outshine the good ones and that is sad) should stop being lazy and be a part of the kids lives. Know what they are doing.

I know someone can come and argue this statement with me, I am not trying to step on anybody toes. This is just my opinion.

When it comes to violence...Video Games are not the only thing out there...and compared to everything else, I don't even think it's on par.

Agreed. Some games are quite tame compared to what you see on some Prime Time television shows.

I think TV has become the babysitter for a lot of parents. So it's easier for them to turn a blind eye to what their children are watching.

That said, because of the interaction in video games, I think video games have more of an affect on kids than movies. It's more real to the kid who is playing the role, if that makes sense.

But seriously- I can't believe what's on TV nowadays!

kiddcartel
Posted 47 days ago

yeah you are right Raine, but still, video games aren't the only thing that have violence in them.

As far as the TV being the babysitter, thats what i'm saying about some people being lazy, sorry thats just my opinion.

It ALL boils down to the parents.

PSORaine
Posted 46 days 23 hours ago

Oh God yes, I'm certainly not saying people aren't lazy! Parent's are TERRIBLE nowadays! And the worst part is that the kids of these parents are beginning to feel ENTITLED to all the freedoms they are given- they start saying "I'm mature" without anything to back it. Then no matter how IMMATURE their actions are, they feel like they're doing all they can, because it's all their mom and dad expected out of them before they handed them M rated games and tickets to R movies and trips to strip clubs.

Then, when girls are in their mid to late 20s, looking for a decent mate, they get all these fat, balding guys who spout crap like "I'm too young to settle down, I'm only 25! There are enough teen parents in the world, don't you think?"

The world is missing a HUGE amount of personal responsibility lately- and passing the buck to video games isn't going to fix it either!

Lord Aldemar
Posted 46 days 23 hours ago

Some parents are terrible. Mine aren't bad, even though they let me play M rated games and watch R rated movies. They hold me to high standards, which I follow. I'm not a raving nutjob who says I'm entitled to everything just because I'm "mature".

If I was mature, I'd be living on my own; and working a full time job. But seeing as I am only almost 15, I can't. My education is needed, and therefore I depend on my parents to support me.

And regarding teen parents; it sickens me. It's gross that it has become this much of an issue for people to keep it in their pants. -_-

PSORaine
Posted 46 days 20 hours ago

yeah but what I was trying to say is there are a lot of guys in their 20s that think having kids would make them "teen parents." Obviously a 15 year old is in a different category.

Also I know a lot of people that live on their own and have a full time job that are not mature, lol.

kiddcartel
Posted 46 days 19 hours ago

I know some people that "THINK" they are mature because they have kids

but we all know that is not the case

when someone tells me something like that it makes me literally want to smack them. guy or girl....I DONT...it just makes me WANT to.
