Finally Gotten Scared By A Game...

Topic: The game, F.E.A.R.

So, I finally tried out F.E.A.R. I've yet to finish it, but dang! People said it was scary, but I doubted a video game could scare me. I'm a huge fan of horror movies, and no game has come close to scaring me. But F.E.A.R. has done what Condemned wasn't able to. Very awesome game. I love the mechanics of the game. All you really have is 'bullet time' as a special power just like Max Payne. So I'm having some great fun with F.E.A.R. I checked the achievement difficulty, apparently it's a 9/10. And I can see why. Try playing the game without slo-mo or without dying. And then you got the MP achievements you have to play for a year to get! So needless to say, I may end up buying the game! Anyone heard of any good deals on it?

I mean it's not scared me to the point where I have nightmares or can't sleep, but it has made me jump. I went 'whoa!' a lot the first night I rented it. Big Grin

fear is more mental scaryness, meaning, your more scared thinking that somethings gonna happen. condemned is more jump out and scare you

See, I thought that Condemned was a much scarier game. Mostly because Condemned requires you to use melee combat. F.E.A.R. has some wicked scary moments, but with slow-mo, grenades and automatic rifles you never get the feeling that something absolutely terrible will happen.

agreed, condemned you always have to worry about something sneaking up and hitting you, fear, theyll shoot at you so they cant scare you as much

See, that's what I don't agree with. In Condemned I always knew something was going to pop up and scare me. It was more psychological. (This is all my point of view and opinions mind you) With F.E.A.R. I expect something to come at me from the dark but then in a nearly well-lit area that little girl appears or that one guy appears then turns into smoke. Does that make sense?

Condemned I learned to expect things, and I got used to those mannequins and stuff. But with F.E.A.R. you turn around and 'GAH!" your controller flies through the air (well, not really, exaggerating here) I wish I could explain it more but I'm tired. Needless to say, F.E.A.R. rightfully got its name. Condemned didn't scare me. It had more of a B movie feel to it. F.E.A.R. definitely seems like a blockbuster horror movie to me. It comes at you from different angles, it doesn't really repeat stuff. With Condemned you had the monsters and the mannequins to scare you (and i guess ominous blood smears?) F.E.A.R. incorporates a lot of mechanics that Max Payne did. It has a sci-fi Stephen King thing to it.

No game scared me more as a gamer than the original Resident Evil. You never knew what was going to jump out at you without warning.

It didn't help that I played the game at midnight with all the lights off.

F.E.A.R. was a pretty freaky game and that little girl just appeared at the worst times in the game. thats and bioshock were the only games ever to get me to jump. i jumped in bioshock when the guy i thought was dead stood up and attacked me. :|

That's what I did with F.E.A.R. the first night I got it. I was telling my friend about it and she was like 'well then turn on the lights'. 'Hell no! It makes the game more fun!"

I admit, it's an adrenaline rush for me to get scared.

Yeah, F.E.A.R. was definitley an awesome, and scary game. And the achievements will make you play forever!! It's only like $25 used at Gamestop if you want to pick it up. I've actually been trying to get my friend to pick it up so I'll have someone to play with. No one on my friend's list picked it up, and I was stoked when it came out; bought it the first day and never regreted it. I think it definitley got over-shadowed by Gears of War (which released only a week later).

No, I understand what you're saying. And you're right, it's all opinions. F.E.A.R. had plenty of parts that made me jump, but anytime something remotely scary happened I just put it in slow-mo and started shooting with my uber rifle or shotgun. Those two things make the game much less scary, for me. Also, the scary moments of the game are all scripted. So after you play through the game once, you won't be scared. You know that the girl will pop up at the right places.

I've played through Condemned twice, and both times scared me silly. The big difference being that the hobos could sneak up behind you, and until you turned around you wouldn't realize they were right there. There were the constant heavy breathing or shouts as the characters ran into another room. The firearms in Condemned are rare, in fact, and it relies on hand-to-hand combat. Putting you so close to those gross characters is unnerving.

Both games have the same developer, though, so obviously there are some similarities between the two. And the developer is producing both sequels to the games. I guess it just depends on what SCARES you more. Some people are frightened by the creepy little girl, others are scared by the "in-your-face" creepiness of Condemned.

I love horror movies and scary movies, but when it comes to games I hate them. I get scared in games so freakin easy. I dont know if its because I have control of the character or that I'm having to pay so much attention but I find myself jumping a lot and shouting the occasional "oh sh#t!!". hahaha oh yeah, i will also admit that Gears scared me as well.
