So your a serious gamer...Do Your Friends/Family Understand?

So this question hit a thread in the teamxbox forums and I thought it would be a good topic to get going here.

I catch a lot of 'ish for gaming. I do have a job that I love and have a pretty good social life, but even if I look at something pertaining to gaming, I get knocked for it. I don't really care personally, I mean everyone has there own opinion, but what kind of things have you come into contact with?

Family wise, everyone understands and grasps ahold of the whole gaming thing. But they are about it.

Would love to get some feedback.

My family understands, they all love gaming. Whether its playing good ol Tetris or playing some Call Of Duty 4 on xbl. I have had people say that i have too much free time. But the people that usually say that are the ones that have no free time because they are always stressing over something. I just dont let it bother me anymore

My mom is anti technology- that includes computers, internet, cell phones- she thinks they're all tools of the devil. So when I'm talking to my brothers about a game, she says "Why are you so into these computer/nintendo (she randomly picks one) games? You weren't raised like that!" Which actually isn't true, I get my geek-ness from my dad. He had one of the first home computers, I grew up "playing" math games and stuff on it. We had AOL when it first came out, he bought me a game gear when game boys were cool (I was SO MAD he didn't get me what everyone else had and he was like "What? This one is in color!") He and I used to play F-Zero together on snes, lol.

Anyway, I have gotten my dad to play guitar hero and Halo, which is hilarious, and he loves the wii, but still, my parents think I play too much ^_^ My brothers think I suck too much for as much as I play, but they aren't as much better than me as they think.

As far as my friends... they're mostly my friends from high school, I move around a lot and don't feel a need to make new friends... I dislike most of the old ones as it is!! Anyway, I don't know what they think about me playing, and I really don't care, lol. At least I'm not THEM!

Most of my friends share my love of gaming, but my family doesn't get it. "If you aren't making money doing it your just wasting time (and money)". I'm not a drinker and I don't do drugs. Why can't gaming by my passion (and stress release)? Now I will concede that I do play a lot, but not to an anti social never leave my house point. Everything in moderation

Some of my friends like gaming some think its really for stupid people, in my family my brother accepts it, but my dad blames my xbox for every bad grade I get.

It's so funny hearing the reasons parents say we get bad grades...I am out of high school but some of the things my parents were outlandish, I thought it was funny.
When I was in school the gameboys were cool, I saved up money and bought one but everytime someone brought in a game gear we thought they were AWESOME!...lol

My girlfriend knows when I'm pissed at her because I'll turn on Call of Duty 4 or Gears of War when she's over...lol

I consider myself a "hardcore" gamer who plays everyday and use it as escape from reality. Both my parents and girlfriend are pretty cool with it. My girlfriend occasionaly bitches at me for playing so much. Some of my friends play games, but not to the extent that I do. Sometimes they refer to me as a "vidiot", but I'm cool with it. It seems that the only gamer friends I have are those that I have met online, which is pretty cool.

"Gaming is my new Addiction"

Well my story is funny. I usually play alot but then to wait until my wife and son are sleeping after 11 pm daily just to get some gaming in. My Wife, who bought me my 360 in the first place, tends to nag me all the time about how much I play.

The funny thing is I don't go out and club like I use to (use to D.J. and party every single night, so I use to get tons of girl's phone numbers), I mostly stay at home with my family. I don't get if I wasn't playing I would be out every night.

Im a pretty "serious" gamer, if someone says they can beat me in something i always take the challenge. I have two type of friends, my gaming friends who i can chat with about anything for 1928391 hours and i have my friends who think gaming is lame and they would rather go out and party, but its all good they both are my friends equally. Family wise, with grades, the blame is always the computer or xbox. Oh well im living my life how i want and i would have to say its pretty good

You would think that my family would love gaming since they all live in a fantasy world. But thats not the case.

Even though I work hard and make decent coin, it's never been good enuff. Being the only son doesn't make it any easier. My father pretty much expected me to follow in the old man's footsteps with the family profession......NOT!!!!!

I had to get where i'm at now by walking my own path. He understands that now, but there was some really bad years where things got really ugly.

OK, you might be saying what the hell does this have to do with gaming. Well at first gaming was a way for me to rebel.(ok i'm just going to play video games and waist my life away) So that and marrying the girl of their nightmares was my new path in life. (been married 16yrs) We lived in a dump trailer and all I did all day was smoke pot, have sex, and play video games. Ah, the good old days.

Fast forward: Video games became a way for me to manage the stress of my daily life. If I hadn't pick that controller all those years ago, I would most likely have been or still be in prison. Knowing this about myself, I really don't give a shit what anyone thinks about my gaming. It's my life, and I'll live it the way I want. I have both gaming and non-gaming friends. It dosen't matter to me if they don't play. When your at my house your gonna have fun one way or another. It's always a party. So come on over and try some dip!!!

I hear ya TK...I could care less what other people think about my gaming and when they pop off with something stupid I just "brush my shoulders off" haha. I have gaming and non gaming friends as well and as I said in the rockband yay or nay thread I always have people coming and going. Here lately we been rocking out to rockband.
