DMMM: Might and Magic

So is this might and magic game any good? I keep seeing people play it on my friends list and I tried it before but couldn't get into it that much. If I hear good feedback on it I will give it another shot like Mass Effeect (and Im glad I did)

I don't like how if you pick something up, like a potion or a collectible in front of someone the game is fricking over. Or if you- I don't know- accidentally kick a guard out a window just to see if you could. Give me jail time, or a fight or something, but don't make me do everything all over again.

Oh and there's a ridiculously jealous female voice in your head that gets annoying as she rips on all the females you encounter. Seriously, it's like... well, ME.

The PC version was decent at best, sadly once it was ported to the 360 it left the few actual fun portions of the game with the PC. Although its still playable if youre really interested but Id rent if before you shell out any money.

If you are a TRUE fan of RPG gaming, you take offense at this game being called an RPG. Same goes for the elder scrolls or the fallout franchises. I love Fallout and I love Oblivion but they aren't rpgs for a true rpg fan, VIP!

There are just 2 true rpgs for the 360, if memory serves. There are a lot of bastardized RPGs- strategy RPGs like Enchanted Arms... Action RPGs like DMMMMMMMMMMMMMM and oblivion and fallout and fable... but True rpgs (lost odyssey, eternal sonata) are tough to find and don't reach the level of awesome that PS2 rpgs have. All the emphasis on graphics has taken away from story and gameplay. The new penny arcade XBLA game is closer to a traditional RPG than most games labeled as RPGs on 360.

Ever notice how when you put western in front of something that is good as it was, it means it's a crappy version made specifically for consumption by the American masses? (except omelettes, western omelettes are great).

I didn't play daggerfall, but I've played the original fallout, and I would not call it an RPG, except in the true definition of the word that classifies ANY game where you play a "role" as a RPG. It's an action game with RPG elements AT BEST. Fallout is a classic, and many games have taken it's ideas and incorporated them without giving Fallout the credit it deserved. Without Fallout there would be no Fable, that's for sure. But that doesn't mean it's an RPG for hard core RPG fans.

I happen to LOVE ar tonelico, btw. It's got a great story line, decent voice acting, interesting and pretty original gameplay, and tongue in cheek humor that makes me giggle every time. Lunar is also a monumental RPG. FFVIII, however, is the standard I hold all RPGs to. Also, an RPG doesn't HAVE to be turn based, exactly, look at FFXI and FFXII it isn't "me" then "them" then "me" etc... But they're still RPGs.

Elder Scrolls and it's ilk ARE bastardized RPGs, it's what happens when you mix American impatience with the fun of leveling up. They are a sub genre as well, I like to call them "action RPGs" because- well that's obvious. J-RPG isn't a subgenre - the first video game RPG was created IN japan- they did it first and they do it best- but the games themselves have nothing to do with being from Japan. America, France, Spain, COULD make a traditional RPG. It's just most know that every new wave of gamers has a shorter attention span than the last, and they're catering to these new kids. The new crop of RPGs have completely splintered from the traditional RPG formula, taking what they like, leaving most of it. It doesn't mean they're bad games, it means they're DIFFERENT games. But traditional RPGs should be called such, not classified by the country that created them. We don't say "J- Survival Horror" or "J-fighting" games even though the most familiar games in these genre are from Japan as well! The problem is that the categories are becoming way too general.

Even going on Gamefly under the RPG heading is a disgrace. Alone in the Dark, Mass Effect, KUF circle of doom, oblivion, overlord, SHEESH!!! Horror RPG, Shooter RPG, Action RPG, Action RPG, Action RPG. And is alone in the dark even an RPG???? Since when has survival horror crossed genres? There are traditional RPGs, then there are other genres that have taken RPG elements. That's just how I view it, anyway. RPG fanatics, RPG loyalists, are by and large dissatisfied with the next gen showing for RPGs. It would be like- say you're a huge fan of shooters, and all of a sudden the only games out in your genre are Devil May Cry and Mass Effect.

And I don't think a greasy D&D player has a CHANCE of beating an otaku at anything. They'd have to stumble out of their mom's basement to do that. And if they can't manage to do that to find a girlfriend, I doubt they would for any sort of physical confrontation. Plus, an otaku wouldn't wait for them to roll their dice and see how much damage they'd be attacking for.

The effeminate otaku would be too busy checking their facebook comments for fighting tips and posting on their twitter, "lolz there's some guy with a 'Jesus saves, everyone else takes 2d6 dmg' shirt coming towards me!" to mount a decent defense. Assuming the D&D nerd didn't wiff their to-hit, it would be no contest. An otaku's inherent fear of real-world conflict gives them a huge negative modifier to their "nerd fight" saving throws.

Furthermore, look at you bringing up our their inability to get a girlfriend! And not too long after you yourself posted about how you didn't think someone's ability to get/keep a girlfriend had any merit. For shame, Raine! For shame.

I wouldn't go so far as to generalize it as "any game where you assume the role of a character," but jeez dude, if you have a game where you can create your own character and slowly grow them through action and adventure in a deep and 'compelling' world filled with tons of stuff to see, do, and loot, I think that qualifies pretty well as an RPG, ya?
I'm not saying Bioshock is an RPG because you can pick a plasmid and stick it in your veins, but I am saying stuff like Elder Scrolls' 80+ hour gameworlds with massive backstories and multiple paths depending on who you play your character and what you say to who does qualify as an RPG, just not what I call a "J-RPG" because it isn't very similar to that style.

The reason I think it's even worth the time & energy to label and discuss these like this is that the 'discerning' RPG fan is generally looking for a great story with some meat & depth to it, character customization, the abilty to make choices and have those choices impact (or seem to impact) the world in some way. Yep, you get this in Final Fantasy. But you get it way MORE in Baldur's Gate. So is Baldur's Gate not an RPG because it's not like Final Fantasy in any way except those listed?
Plus BG has dwarves.

Perhaps instead of referring to the original, traditional method of RPG play as J-RPG, calling it turn-based would be better? I know some of the newer ones, which have evolved somewhat as you said, get called things like "Active battle system RPGs". I do definitely think there should be some distinction between Final Fantasy DCLXVI and Fallout 3, since the RPG otaku would soil themselves and cry "UNCRE!" when they realized they had to atually aim the nuke launcher from a first-person perspective. But I'm serious man, saying Dragon Quest-patterned games are RPGs and Elder Scrolls, Fallout and DMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM are in an altogether seperate group of 'wannabe RPGs' is disrespectful!!
